Custom bokeh or Defocus effect in Nuke

Custom bokeh or Defocus effect in Nuke

Here i am explaining how to create Custom bokeh or Defocus effect using convolve tool inside Nuke and how to generate chromatic aberration with the bokeh effect.

There are several custom plugins and Gizmos available for creating bokeh effects in nuke. But how to create Custom bokeh shapes using Nuke's by-default tools.

Here is the solution. Nuke's "Convolve" tool doing the magic.

Here is some examples:

Default circle shape.

Custom heart shape. Used roto tool to create heart shape.

You can use Letter or special characters.

Convolve tool.

Nuke--> toolbar--> filter--> convolve.

Convolve have B and A input arrows. B for source input and A for custom shape ( Create by yourself ). Connect both inputs and change channels to rgba and enable channel as rgba.alpha to make it work.

Generate chromatic aberration:

Chromatic aberration or "color fringing" is caused by the camera lens not focusing different wavelengths of light onto the exact same focal plane (the focal length for different wavelengths is different) and/or by the lens magnifying different wavelengths differently. These types of chromatic aberration are referred to as "Longitudinal Chromatic Aberration" and "Lateral Chromatic Aberration" respectively and can occur concurrently. The amount of chromatic aberration depends on the dispersion of the glass.

How to mimic this in Nuke. Separate a channel ( your choice, most of the time it happened only on red) from mainstream. Add a Transform node and translate  x or y else scale until get you want. Add the channel back with mainstream using ShuffleCopy node.
